Dengue
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that places 3.9 billion people at risk worldwide. Up to 50% of the world’s population is now at risk of dengue, yet there is currently no specific treatment for the disease. Severe dengue can lead to hospitalisation and death. Patient deterioration is usually unpredictable, making close monitoring of dengue progression vital for disease management. This requires frequent labour-intensive examination and close monitoring of vital and laboratory parameters – heart rate, blood pressure and haematocrit. However, this is often unfeasible in non-hospital or resource-limited settings, particularly during the dengue season when admissions can surge by 300%, overwhelming the local healthcare system. Furthermore, the invasive nature of blood tests can be uncomfortable and result in complications for the patient.
